Virginia Woolf and her “Little Sisters” : Rereading A Room of One’s Own Through its Literary, Critical, and Feminist Posterity in the Anglophone Transatlantic Space from the 1960s to the Present Day

Bien souvent considéré comme un texte phare de la critique littéraire féministe au XXe siècle, A Room of One’s Own de Virginia Woolf a généré, depuis sa publication en 1929, un riche héritage à travers le monde, mais sans doute plus encore dans l’espace Atlantique anglophone. Cette thèse vise à mettre en lumière et à analyser la postérité anglo-américaine de l’essai, en s’attachant tout particulièrement aux versants littéraire, critique et féministe de celle-ci, des années soixante à nos jours. Articulée autour de trois axes clés (“Rooms of Our Own”, “A Literature of (T)He(i)r Own” et “A Voice of One’s Own”), cette étude de la postérité de A Room of One’s Own aborde nombre des sujets qui se sont trouvés au cœur des écrits de femmes et de la critique littéraire féministe au cours des dernières décennies, telles que les conditions matérielles de l’écriture, la place des femmes dans l’histoire et dans le canon littéraire, et l’articulation entre écriture, identité et conscience de genre. Au prisme de l’essai woolfien et de sa postérité, ce travail se propose ainsi de réfléchir à l’articulation entre « femmes, genre et fiction » du tournant du XXe siècle au tournant du XXIe siècle et de dévoiler les différents biais par lesquels écrivain·es, critiques et féministes contemporain·es ont interrogé cette articulation en établissant un dialogue avec A Room of One’s Own, en poursuivant l’entreprise woolfienne, mais aussi en nuançant et, parfois, en contredisant les différentes conclusions auxquelles l’essai aboutit. Aussi, tout en cartographiant la postérité de l’essai woolfien, cette thèse offre une relecture de A Room of One’s Own à la lumière de son héritage littéraire, critique et féministe.Generally considered to be a landmark of 20th century feminist literary criticism, Virginia Woolf’s A Room of One’s Own has known, since its publication in 1929, many afterlives across the world, especially in the Anglophone transatlantic space. This thesis aims at bringing to light and analysing A Room of One’s Own’s Anglo-American literary, critical and feminist posterity from the 1960s to the present day. Articulated around three main perspectives (“Rooms of Our Own”, “A Literature of (T)He(i)r Own” and “A Voice of One’s Own”), this study of A Room of One’s Own’s posterity tackles many of the concerns which have formed the core of women’s literature and feminist criticism in the last decades, such as the material conditions of writing, women’s place in history and in the literary canon, and the articulation between writing, gender identity and consciousness. By analysing A Room of One’s Own and its posterity, this work thus offers a reflection on “women, gender and fiction” from the turn of the 20th century to the turn of the 21st century, and highlights the many ways in which contemporary authors, critics and feminists have questioned this articulation while establishing a dialogue with A Room of One’s Own, carrying on Woolf’s endeavour, but also qualifying and, sometimes contradicting the various conclusions she draws in her essay. As such, this thesis not only maps A Room of One’s Own’s posterity but it also offers a re-reading of Woolf’s text thanks to the light cast by its literary, critical, and feminist heritage
